How to play Powerball
According to lottery officials, interested players can sell Powerball tickets for $2 per play in all 45 US states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. But while the odds of winning any prize during a Powerball drawing are said to be roughly 1 in 25, the odds of a player hitting the jackpot are significantly lower, about 1 in 292 million, officials say.
When buying a Powerball ticket, the player is asked to choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and one number from 1 to 26, with a total of six figures printed on a play slip. Those who don’t want to pick numbers can choose a lottery terminal and pick their numbers randomly.
Small prizes are awarded to players who hold tickets with numbers that partially match the order announced during the drawing. To win the jackpot, the ticket must match all six numbers called, including the final Powerball number.
Saturday’s drawing is the 40th Powerball drawing since the last jackpot win in August. If no one wins during Monday night’s drawing, the Powerball run will become the longest in the history of the game without a top prize winner.
If one or more Powerball tickets are won on Monday, the estimated jackpot cash value will be $929.1 million, according to the lottery. As usual, winners can receive their prize in a lump sum, which can be collected in full after applicable taxes are deducted, or as an annuity paid over 30 graduations over 29 years.
