Mexico out of 2022 World Cup in tiebreaker on goal difference; Argentina and Poland advanced from Group C

With Group A and Group B on the books, Leo Messi and Argentina are advancing to the knockout round. Argentina beat Poland 2-0, while Mexico’s 2-1 win against Saudi Arabia didn’t help them advance. For much of the match, with Mexico and Poland level on points, goal difference and goals scored, it looked like the tiebreaker would be the deciding factor, but a late goal from Saudi Arabia sealed the deal and pushed Mexico behind Poland. Mexico failed to advance to the knockout rounds for the first time since 1978. Poland advanced to the last 16 with the best goal difference.

Before this, Tunisia won 1-0 against France and Australia won 1-0 against Denmark. France, despite losing the tournament, will advance after winning the group stage, while Australia managed to win and will be playing again in the round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time since 2006, and only the second time in their history. Denmark finished last in the group after a very disappointing campaign.
