13 Artists Expected to Blow this Year
Every year the Ghanaian music industry discovers new talent. We are exposed to more than three hundred musicians who are looking for a piece of the mainstream pie every other year. A few are worth it whilst most of them need to work harder. Some of these artists use several of the already buzzing avenues like mixtapes, videos and big features to announce their presence in the game. Others are discovered by one of the big labels in their infancy and put on a pedestal. Not every single one of the talented acts get to make it in the end though and with that said, here are some of the artists we expect to make waves in the music industry this year:
Cabum: After being touted as one of the best rappers by Trigmatic and Stone, and dropping a visual for his successful single ‘So Tuff’ with Edem last year, this Kumasi hip-hop stalwart is expected to take the industry by storm this year. Boasting of a great musical background (his father is Alhaji K Frimpong), rapping, singing and production abilities, this lyrical juggernaut is expected to thrill fans all over the nation with his style and energy. For starters, he has been compared to Lord Kenya who was a great hit maker in his heydays.
Ko-Jo Cue: After building a grassroots following for himself in 2 years with 6 mixtapes, the rapper whose fans affectionately label him as the punchline king had an incredible year in 2012. Starting off with his cult classic ‘Winning’, he belted out 3 well received singles last year (most notable amongst them is ‘Lie Ben’ with Asem) and also released his first-ever visual for ‘The Flood’ thus setting himself up this year. He has already released what he claims is his last mixtape in ‘Before We Shine 2’ and has begun a radio and television tour in hopes to draw more attention to his artistry. With rumours of incredible singles and visuals on the way, this guy seems to have a plan and we can only hope it works out for him.
Klu: This rapper/singer/producer is one of the pioneers of the mixtape game in the Ghanaian music industry (almost 10 mixtapes in 2 years). 2012 saw him grow as an artist and release his most successful mixtape till date ‘Canvas Life’ which boasted of the hugely successful ‘Love You Make You Shock’ ballad with Edem. There is news of another mixtape on the way and a slew of visuals, and one can only say if this triple threat finds his stride only God can stop him.
Dein: Already an act on D-Black’s ‘Black Avenue Music’, this femcee released three singles last year and was also featured on a couple of singles from his crew. After battling another artist on this list in front of a cheerful crowd and making waves on youtube, a lot of attention is being paid to this emcee and we can only hope his management will make the right moves.
Lousika: At this point, the 2131/Cue artist cannot be called a newbie by anyone in this industry. However, she hasn’t found that big record that wins everyone over yet and that is one of the reasons for her appearing on this list. Her management seemed to be concentrating on visuals mostly last year and that has worked incredibly well since she is a very attractive lady and also has an incredible attitude. We expect them to change tactics this year and attack the radio and clubs with bangers so as to cement her entry into the industry once and for all.
Hot Jam: This towering emcee announced his full-on entry into the industry last year with his ‘My Time’ single which featured a hook by Edem. Lyrically, he is one of the very best on this list and has wowed many music connoisseurs with his guest verses. He has affiliations with C-Real, E.L and Edem’s camps and we only hope one of them recognizes his potential and invests in him. If all goes well, this could be the year that he drops nothing but hot jams.
Kaakie: The queen diva was a fan favorite last year and even earned for herself a performance at the VGMA’s. With the support of a strong team and incredible talent, this female dancehall artist had radio and the clubs on lock last year but failed to match it with visuals and appearances where it matters the most. We can say she is already becoming a household name and now all she needs is the right moves to make her face recognizable everywhere too.
Rumor: The Skillions machine has produced a lot of talented acts and this wordsmith is no different. After releasing a very successful project in the form of ‘Friends, Fans and Followers’ and headlining his own shows; Rumor has already started his journey on a very high note. His visual for ‘Well Well’ was also one of the dopest last year and might earn nominations at a lot of Video Awards this year. Even though he doesn’t look likely to blow up massively just yet, we expect him to at-least create his lane and own it as only he can.
Strongman: After impressing the whole country on live television and winning GHOne’s ‘Next Big Thing’ competition, this lyricist is one of the artists to watch-out for this year. If he finds the right team and improves on his songwriting as a whole, he is guaranteed to be an unstoppable force.
T- Flow: Even though he came in second to Strongman (many people say he should’ve won though), this emcee has kept busy and proved why he is one of the best up and comers. His songwriting is very impressive and he also knows how to control crowds which is a plus for any artist. All he needs is the right team and he will own his spot at the top.
Joey B: Another Skillions product, Beezy had last year on lock as far as guest verses were concerned and earned himself a huge hit in the form of D-Black’s ‘Vera’. He has already started the year off on a very positive note as his B.A.M collabo with Desmond ‘Alhaji’ is already picking up and there are rumors of the video for his ‘Strawberry Ginger’ single being ready to air. There is absolutely no doubt that 2013 is Beezy’s year and he is a testament to what talent and a great team can do for an artist.
Felly: Lynx entertainment’s newest act is a beautiful singer/rapper who has the potential to become the best femcee in Ghana. Her team has proven time and again that they can provide the right artist the platform to shine and our only wish is that it works for her just as it did for others before her.
